Biography

Sir Norman Moore (1847-1922), 1st Baronet, physician, Irish scholar, read natural science at St. Catharines College, 1865-68, studied anatomy at St. Bartholomews Hospital, London, 1869, and was Warden, 1873-91. As well as studies in several branches of science, he visited Ireland annually and gained extensive knowledge of its language and history, corresponding with Standish Hayes OGrady (1832-1915). He contributed 459 essays to the Dictionary of National Biography, and was an expert in military history. Moore married Amy Leigh Smith (1859-1901) in 1880: their elder son Alan Hilary Moore (1882-1959) succeeded to the baronetcy. He married Milicent Ludlow in 1903. Moore became President of the Royal College of Physicians in 1918 and was made Baronet in 1919. He left his books to his wife, and his manuscripts, including a large number of Standish OGradys transcripts from Irish Manuscripts, to his son Alan, with a wish that both should be given to CUL. Of the books CUL took those which it did not already possess.
