West Building (Time and Nautical Almanac Building) and Works Pound, Herstmonceux, 1951 - 1981
Scope and Contents
The West Building was built to the western boundary of Herstmonceux Castle as a permanent home for the Chronometer Workshop, Electronics Workshop, Engineering Workshop, Nautical Almanac Office and Time Department. The Works Pound was located nearby. Construction began in 1954 and was completed in 1957, with an extension built in the late 1970s. Architect Brian O'Rorke was the consultant architect for the whole scheme and many of these plans bear his name.
