Scope and Contents
A 16mm, colour cinefilm, without sound.
0 - 24sec. Interior scenes (in a marquee) at an Air India meal to celebrate J.R.D Tata re-enacting his first Karachi-Ahmedabad-Bombay flight of 1932 - on 15th October 1962, Bombay airport. Guests include Mrs Thelma Tata (wife of J.R.D Tata). Many of the women are carrying red fans with Air India route maps on them.
24sec - 33sec. Man driving a cattle drawn two-wheeled open cart with ‘Burmah Shell Aviation Service’ written in yellow on a red background on its side. Several small aeroplanes can be seen in the background.
33sec - 36sec. More interior scenes within the marquee; a large Air India table decoration is prominently displayed on a table.
36sec - 53sec. People at an airport, some in either army or police uniform, and the cart again. Then, a silver, single engine prop aircraft (a de Havilland Leopard Moth VT-AKH) taxiing and surrounded by people including press photographers. The plane is then shown beside an Air India jet airliner.
53sec - 1 min 7sec. Two women (Lady Tymms and Mrs Thelma Tata) posing for the camera, with a dog.
1min 7sec - 1min 13sec. Ships at sea, viewed from the shore.
1min 13sec - 1min 19sec. J.R.D Tata having his photograph taken by his wife, Thelma. The couple then posing for a photograph in the same garden.
1min 19sec - 1min 31sec. Women, and a few men, carrying rocks on their heads at a building site.
1min 31sec - 1min 42sec. Birds, probably vultures, in trees.
1min 42sec - 1min 55sec. J.R.D Tata and his wife, and Sir Frederick Tymms and his wife, at the airport, with planes in the background.
1min 56sec - 2min 13sec. Lady Tymms walking in the garden of a large white building, and outside a mosque or mausoleum(?)
2min 14sec - 2min 19sec. Grand buildings in New Delhi. In the foreground a man is laying leaves or grass out to dry (possibly as a mulch?)
2min 19sec - 2min 40sec. City scenes, including a snake charmer, various people going about their daily lives, cars and motorised three-wheel vehicles.
2min 40sec - 3min. Large group of men and women, outside a marquee, all formally attired. The men are wearing suits and ties, the women dresses or saris.
3min - 3min 9sec. Buffalo (?) in a waterhole in front of an ancient ruined building, then further shots of the ruins.
3min 9sec - 3min 48sec. Men at a roadside heating or cooking something, with further scenes of carts, bicycles and people passing by. Building with a sign saying ‘Jalandra Hotel Fish Fry’.
3min 48sec - 3min 55sec. Scenes of snow-capped mountains from a BOAC plane (identified by writing on the engine which is in shot).
